St Anthony's Pre-school has helped parents of Brighton & Hove to care and develop their children for over 30 years. We are proud of our achievements and thrilled with the numbers of returning families year-on-year. We thrive to be a part of the local community, and are proud to see our children develop at the local schools that we feed in Hove, Hangleton and Portslade. We welcome everyone to visit and meet us. We are at St Peter's Community Hall on the corner of Holmes Avenue and Hangleton Road, Hove - next to the windmill. It is big, bright and has lots of lovely outdoor space for the children to play in. Our team members contribute to the caring and nurturing provision that we are well-known for.

  • What is the difference between a nursery, pre school and Kindergarten?
The difference between a nursery, pre-school, and kindergarten in the UK largely depends on location and educational approach: Nursery: Typically for children aged 0-3 years, focusing on early development, play, and social interaction in a childcare setting. Pre-school: Usually for children aged 3-5 years, offering a structured early education environment that prepares them for primary school. Kindergarten: Commonly a term used in the US, Germany (where it originated), and some other countries. It refers to the first formal year of schooling for 4-6-year-olds, bridging the gap between early childhood education and primary school. In the UK, nurseries and pre-schools are more common, while in countries like the US, kindergarten is often the first year of compulsory education. St Anthony's takes children from 2-5, so we take children from a younger age than most pre-schools, but not babies like a children's nursery school would. Some nurseries may have two sites for babies and toddlers and a pre-school for older children under the same name and organisation.
  • What is covered in a Preschool Education?
Our learning is based around literacy-rich books throughout the year to hook the children's interest into reading, which is a key part of early years development in their language and communication skills. It's not a classroom, but our preschoolers are introduced to simple concepts in all 7 areas of learning. The children learn through creative play using their imagination, then we follow their lead in where they want to take their learning with fun and games for growth and discovery. We are more than a child care service or creche. We regard Preschool education as important and beneficial for any child to give opportunities for new social interactions to build confidence and independence. We want to develop cognitive, psychosocial and physical development-based learning, and how to verbally communicate with others with social skills. Children who attend our Preschool learn how the world around them works through creative play and communication, in a happy and supportive environment which is a vital element for childhood growth.
